Dear Parents,
Riverside College stands in gratitude and celebration that the pandemic along with the hardships that it brought to many is now over. The decision to go back to our roots and start implementing and elevating the experiences for all learners and teachers again was the best decision ever! We did this by bringing back all field trips, excursions and cultural outings for all learners. Some of the events we hosted this term included our long-standing annual Art Auction, Africa Day celebrations and also the sporting events that we were a part of. We want to create that wholesome feeling of happiness again, so that our learners can get on with the task of passing and achieving their ultimate goals and dreams!

As I sat here trying to decide what message I wanted to end this term with I was once again struck by the simple power of gratitude! Yes, we could approach each day with fear, anger, resentment and even envy, but would that leave us feeling good about ourselves, about the people we share our lives with or the people we work with? Would it improve the way we treat and deal with the teachers, caretakers and other significant role players that we have chosen to help us bring up our children or look after our elderly parents? Would this help us to be better law-abiding citizens or even more courteous and respectable road users? Would this make you a better person, parent or partner?

Being an adult and a parent is often be very challenging and even difficult, but so too is being a child and a young adult when the only example you have comes from someone who sees everything as negative and unfair, so it all depends on what you are focusing your energy on…Shifting your perspective and starting your day from a position of gratitude can and does make all the difference in the world!

It is so easy to get bogged down by the mundane tasks of parenting and living life that we often lose sight of the bigger picture – which is ultimately to live a respectable, fun filled, well balanced and productive life as a caring member of a healed society. A society that we have helped to heal through our focused efforts to be the positive change that we would like to see in the world around us.

Please remember that each day is a new opportunity to make a positive impact and difference not only in your child’s life but also your own and by maintaining a positive outlook, you are creating a more enjoyable, fulfilling and loving environment for you and your children.
